CEN Consultation on Responsible Gaming

The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) is now welcoming public comments on its proposed Responsible Gaming Framework until 25 September 2010. CEN intends to publish the framework in October as a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) which would provide voluntary standards to the remote gambling industry for best practices. According to CEN, the aim of the framework is to ensure “consumer and stakeholder confidence in the industry” and maintain that the “online gambling industry operates in accordance with best practice and high standards.” Questions have been raised by the European Casino Association as to how successful the standards will be for an industry that is not yet regulated in most Member States and as to the timing of the initiative which will likely be published just before the European Commission’s Green Paper on gambling.
